OKWU women's soccer team showcased its championship talent and abilities in the NAIA Opening Round, defeating Mid-America Christian University 4-0 to advance to the National Tournament Final Site in Pensacola, Florida.
After a tense opening half, Laura Gieseler broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The second half was all OKWU, as the attack exploded for three more goals. Ana Chavez doubled the lead in the 49th minute off an assist from Tessa Edwards, followed by Kristen Bruhns in the 77th minute. Frederiekke Nielsen capped the scoring in the 88th minute to seal the deal.
Defensively, goalkeeper Alessandra Martinez anchored the back line with three saves, earning the clean sheet. OKWU controlled the tempo throughout, outshooting MACU 11-6 and converting four of eight shots on goal. The Eagles also dominated set pieces, earning 4 corner kicks compared to MACU's 2 corner kicks.
With this victory, The Lady Eagles improves to 19-1-2 on the season and moves past the Opening Round into the NAIA National Tournament Final Site, continuing their quest for a national title. Go Eagles!
