BARTLESVILLE, OK —
OKWU opened its role as NAIA National Tournament host with a statement win on Friday night, overpowering Southern University at New Orleans 104–66 to advance to Saturday's second-round matchup.
The Eagles wasted no time seizing control, racing to a 44–22 halftime lead behind efficient shooting and relentless defensive pressure. OKWU shot a blistering 53% in the first half and never allowed SUNO to find rhythm, forcing turnovers and controlling the glass. Lead Changed in tonight's game was zero with the largest lead at 46, underscoring the Eagles' wire-to-wire dominance.
Depth proved to be one of OKWU's biggest weapons. The Eagles' bench exploded for 74 points, outscoring SUNO's reserves by a massive margin. Yashi McKenzie led all scorers with 17 points, while sharpshooter Angel Hidalgos added 15, hitting five threes. Nick Bene provided a spark with 10 points and five assists, and the Eagles' balanced attack featured six players scoring eight or more.
The Eagles interior presence was equally overwhelming. The team piled up 56 points in the paint and grabbed 56 total rebounds, including 19 offensive boards, leading to 25 second-chance points.
With the win, Oklahoma Wesleyan advances to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament, continuing its postseason run on home court. The Eagles will tip off again Saturday at 6:00 PM, looking to ride Friday's momentum into a spot in the tournament's next stage.
