Springfield, MO —
The Oklahoma Wesleyan baseball team dropped a high-scoring road contest to Evangel University on Monday afternoon, falling 14–12 in a back-and-forth matchup. The loss moves the Eagles to 15–10 overall and 8–6 in conference play.
Oklahoma Wesleyan jumped on the board early in the first inning when Joseph Gutierrez delivered an RBI single to bring home JT Maloney. Evangel answered in the bottom half with a two-run home run to take the early lead, but the Eagles quickly responded in the second as Jose Ramirez launched a solo home run to even the score at 2–2.
After Evangel built a four-run advantage in the third inning, Oklahoma Wesleyan responded with a huge offensive frame in the fourth. The Eagles plated five runs on a string of hits from Jose Parreno, Wally Diaz, JT Maloney, and Joseph Gutierrez to regain the lead and swing momentum back in their favor.
The offensive surge continued throughout the middle innings. Parreno added an RBI triple in the fifth, Gilbert Morales drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Braydon Caldwell extended the lead with a solo home run in the seventh. Maloney followed with a home run of his own in the eighth to push the Eagles ahead 11–9.
Evangel answered late in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of several walks and miscues to score four runs and reclaim the lead. Oklahoma Wesleyan attempted to rally in the ninth and pushed across a run on a passed ball, but the comeback fell just short.
The Eagles finished the game with 16 hits. Maloney led the offense with three hits, including a home run, while Gutierrez delivered four hits and two RBIs. Parreno added three hits and two RBIs, and Caldwell and Ramirez each recorded home runs.
Oklahoma Wesleyan will look to bounce back this weekend as they return home to host Friends University in KCAC conference play.
