LINDSBORG, Kan. — Oklahoma Wesleyan Tennis put together a strong weekend at the KCAC Fall Individual Championships, finishing the tournament with
12 total medals, including eight gold and four bronze, across singles and doubles competition.
The opening day of the championships featured the first and second rounds of play. Along with the competition on court, the Eagles had to deal with challenging weather conditions as excessive heat forced play to be suspended for several hours. The extended break made restarting matches difficult, but the OKWU players responded well and battled through the remainder of the day to advance throughout their respective draws.
Competition resumed on the second day with semifinal matches followed by championship and third-place matches. Weather once again became a factor when a storm caused approximately a one-hour delay. With outdoor play unable to continue, the tournament was eventually moved indoors so the remaining matches could be completed.
Despite the interruptions throughout the weekend, Oklahoma Wesleyan produced several championship performances. On the men's side,
Helori Peron captured the 4S singles championship, while Peron teamed with
Raphael Alvado to win the 2D doubles title. Andy Seidel,
Yassine Azehaf and Alvado each added third-place finishes in singles.
The OKWU women had an especially successful championship round, collecting six gold medals.
Jewel Henderson, Océane Frendjian, Yelena Sanchez and Nancy Henderson each won their respective singles draws. The Eagles also claimed championships at
1D with Rocio Espinal/Jewel Henderson and
3D with Yelena Sanchez/Nancy Henderson. Frendjian and
Madeline Henderson added a bronze medal with a third-place finish at 2D.
