Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Men's Soccer Wins Close 1-0 Battle On the Road

Men's Soccer

WINFIELD, Kan. — Oklahoma Wesleyan University Men's Soccer controlled the tempo and dominated the run of play Wednesday night, using a second-half penalty from Mateja Bozic and a suffocating defensive performance to secure a 1-0 road victory over Southwestern College at Jantz Stadium.

The Eagles dictated possession throughout the 90 minutes, keeping Southwestern pinned inside its own half for extended stretches while consistently working the ball into dangerous areas. OKWU finished with a 12-0 advantage in shots, including seven attempts on frame, while conceding just one corner kick.

Despite controlling the opening 45 minutes, Oklahoma Wesleyan entered halftime locked in a scoreless battle. The Eagles generated seven first-half shots and four corners but were unable to find the finishing touch as Southwestern goalkeeper Franco Guazzotti made three saves to keep his side level.

It did not take long for OKWU to break the deadlock after the restart.

Just 36 seconds into the second half, the Eagles earned a penalty kick, providing Bozic with an opportunity from the spot. The forward calmly converted the penalty in the 46th minute, finding the back of the net for his first goal of the season and handing Oklahoma Wesleyan the 1-0 advantage.

With the lead secured, OKWU continued to control proceedings through the midfield while remaining organized in its defensive shape. The Eagles allowed Southwestern virtually no room to build through the lines or create opportunities in the final third.

Ronardo Burgher was a constant threat in the attacking third, leading the Eagles with five shots, three of which were on target. Eguzki Hashimoto added two shots on frame, while Marcos Vidan, Nasreddine Benbella and Bozic also contributed to an attack that continually tested the Southwestern back line.

On the opposite end of the pitch, Oklahoma Wesleyan's defensive unit turned in a dominant 90-minute performance. The Eagles did not allow Southwestern to register a single shot, much less an attempt on goal. Santiago Mejia, Ognjen Pilic and the OKWU back line consistently disrupted Southwestern's buildup before it could develop into a legitimate scoring threat.

Goalkeeper Marko Rodic played the full 90 minutes between the posts and secured the clean sheet. While Rodic was not forced into a save, his presence behind an organized back four helped the Eagles see out the one-goal advantage through the final whistle.

The numbers reflected Oklahoma Wesleyan's command of the match. The Eagles outshot Southwestern 12-0, held a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal and earned six corner kicks compared with Southwestern's one. The Moundbuilders were also whistled for 21 fouls and received four cautions as they attempted to slow the OKWU attack.

Although only one goal separated the two sides on the scoreboard, Oklahoma Wesleyan controlled the match from box to box. Bozic supplied the decisive finish, while a disciplined defensive effort ensured the Eagles left Winfield with the victory and a clean sheet.

Final: Oklahoma Wesleyan 1, Southwestern 0
