Softball Sweeps Saint Mary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

In two tightly contested games, the OKWU softball team came out on top and earned a pair of important KCAC games. The wins put the Lady Eagles at 30-9 on the year and 15-1 in the KCAC to this point.

Recap – Game 1, 7-5 win:

  • Saint Mary scored a run in the top of the 1st inning, but OKWU responded immediately. Lindy Alexander had a 2-run double, and later that inning Maddy Wiese brought Alexander home with an RBI single. The Lady Eagles led 3-1.
  • OKWU would increase their lead in the 3rd and 4th innings. Alexander knocked a hit that brought Tahlor Stefek home. Kaitlin Anglin batted in a run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. In the 4th, Alexander got another RBI with a single that scored Sofia Cardenas. Going into the top of the 5th, the Lady Eagles led 6-1.
  • Saint Mary responded in the 5th, adding 3 runs to cut into the lead. OKWU would add a run in their half of the inning to make it 7-4.
  • A Saint Mary homer made it 7-5, but OKWU's relief pitcher Sarah Brown came in for the final 7 batters and allowed just 1 hit, clinching the save and the win for the Lady Eagles. Maddy Wiese pitched 5 innings and earned the win.

Game 2 – 5-4 win (9 innings)

  • It took extras for the two squads to settle things in the second game of the afternoon. It was a pitchers duel as runs were hard to come by for both teams.
  • Saint Mary held a 2-0 lead headed into the bottom of the 4th inning. The Lady Eagles got on the board when Payton Langley hit an RBI single to score Maddy Wiese.
  • In the bottom of the 5th, Ryleigh Clinton's single brought Tahlor Stefek home to knot the game at 2-2.
  • Neither team would score again until extra innings. In the 8th, Saint Mary scored to take a 3-2 lead. When the Lady Eagles were up to bat, Lindy Alexander's RBI single tied things up again.
  • In the top of the 9th, a sacrifice fly scored a run for the Spires, who led 4-3.
  • The Lady Eagles had to respond, and respond they did. Sofia Cardenas hit an RBI single to tie the game at 4 each. Later that inning, Tahlor Stefek stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jill Blair, giving the Lady Eagles the win and series sweep.
