Box Score 3 The OKWU Eagles baseball squad found themselves in a trio of tightly contested games at the KCAC Tournament last weekend. OKWU won their opening matchup over Friends before losing two one-run games, first to Ottawa and then in the elimination game against Kansas Wesleyan.
Recap – vs Friends, 7-3 win:
- The Eagles jumped ahead early and never looked back in this one. In the 2nd, Josh Logan's RBI single scored Marcus Randall. Later in the inning, Julio Goncalves hit a double that scored 2 more runs to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd.
- OKWU did more damage in the 3rd, first when Mason Brinkley scored on a wild pitch and again when Derek Sims scored on an RBI from Hector Manon.
- In the 4th, Cody Muncy knocked in two more runs with his single that scored Seth Delgado and Goncalves, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
- Friends would cut into the lead, scoring two runs in the 5th and another in the 8th, but they could not get any closer than that.
- Oracio De Leon pitched a complete game, striking out 11 batters and giving up just 3 earned runs.
Recap – vs Ottawa, 3-2 loss:
- Runs were harder to come by in this matchup between the Eagles and the conference's regular season champions. In the top of the 5th, OKWU scored 2 runs to take the early lead.
- Ottawa responded in the bottom of the inning, cutting into the lead with a single run.
- In the 6th, the Braves tied the game on a sacrifice fly to knot things at 2.
- In the bottom of the 9th, the Braves' Holland Boan hit an RBI single that won the game and sent OKWU into an elimination game.
Saturday – vs KWU, 7-6 loss
- The Eagles found themselves in another tight game on Saturday when they faced Kansas Wesleyan in Saturday's elimination game. KWU scored in the top of the 1st to take the lead.
- In the bottom of the 4th, Cody Muncy hit an RBI single that scored Delgado to tie the game at 1.
- KWU scored 3 runs in the 5th to make it 4-1 in favor of the Coyotes.
- Muncy struck again in the 5th, this time scoring Derek Sims on an RBI single. KWU led 4-2 at the end of 5 innings.
- KWU would expand their lead, scoring 3 runs in the 7th to make it 7-2.
- As the OKWU season hung in the balance, they rallied back. Hector Manon hit a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the 7th to make it 7-4.
- In the bottom of the 9th, needing a surge to keep the KCAC dream alive, the Eagles nearly completed the comeback. Marcus Randall drove in a run to make it 7-5. Later in the inning, Hector Manon's RBI single scored Tommy Davis to make it 7-6. However, the rally would fall just short, as OKWU could not manage another run in the game.
