Eagles Battle at KCAC Tournament

| Box Score 3

The OKWU Eagles baseball squad found themselves in a trio of tightly contested games at the KCAC Tournament last weekend. OKWU won their opening matchup over Friends before losing two one-run games, first to Ottawa and then in the elimination game against Kansas Wesleyan.

Recap – vs Friends, 7-3 win:

  • The Eagles jumped ahead early and never looked back in this one. In the 2nd, Josh Logan's RBI single scored Marcus Randall. Later in the inning, Julio Goncalves hit a double that scored 2 more runs to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd.
  • OKWU did more damage in the 3rd, first when Mason Brinkley scored on a wild pitch and again when Derek Sims scored on an RBI from Hector Manon.
  • In the 4th, Cody Muncy knocked in two more runs with his single that scored Seth Delgado and Goncalves, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
  • Friends would cut into the lead, scoring two runs in the 5th and another in the 8th, but they could not get any closer than that.
  • Oracio De Leon pitched a complete game, striking out 11 batters and giving up just 3 earned runs.

Recap – vs Ottawa, 3-2 loss:

  • Runs were harder to come by in this matchup between the Eagles and the conference's regular season champions. In the top of the 5th, OKWU scored 2 runs to take the early lead.
  • Ottawa responded in the bottom of the inning, cutting into the lead with a single run.
  • In the 6th, the Braves tied the game on a sacrifice fly to knot things at 2.
  • In the bottom of the 9th, the Braves' Holland Boan hit an RBI single that won the game and sent OKWU into an elimination game.

Saturday – vs KWU, 7-6 loss

  • In the bottom of the 4th, Cody Muncy hit an RBI single that scored Delgado to tie the game at 1.
  • KWU scored 3 runs in the 5th to make it 4-1 in favor of the Coyotes.

  • KWU would expand their lead, scoring 3 runs in the 7th to make it 7-2.
  • As the OKWU season hung in the balance, they rallied back. Hector Manon hit a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the 7th to make it 7-4.
  • In the bottom of the 9th, needing a surge to keep the KCAC dream alive, the Eagles nearly completed the comeback. Marcus Randall drove in a run to make it 7-5. Later in the inning, Hector Manon's RBI single scored Tommy Davis to make it 7-6. However, the rally would fall just short, as OKWU could not manage another run in the game.
