OKWU Splits Doubleheader with #22 Ottawa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

In a matchup of two of the top teams in the KCAC, the OKWU and Ottawa University softball teams split Wednesday's doubleheader. The loss was OKWU's first conference loss of the season, but they still stand at 11-1 in the KCAC and 26-9 overall. They currently hold a 1-game lead in the KCAC.

Recap – Game 1, 4-3 win:

  • OKWU got on the board first, putting up all 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Sofia Cardenas scored, beating the tag at the plate to give OKWU a 1-0 lead.
  • Lindy Alexander stepped up to plate next and drove in Bailey Knorr with a single.
  • Later that inning, Bailey Zornes drove in 2 runs with a single. Tahlor Stefek and Alexander scored to give OKWU the 4-0 lead.
  • In the top of the 4th, Ottawa responded when Hannah Copeland launched a homerun that drove in 3 runs.
  • However, that would be all the damage either team would muster for the rest of the game. Maddy Wiese earned the win for the Lady Eagles, pitching all 7 innings and striking out 11 of the 29 batters she faced.
  • OKWU would clinch the game in the top of the 7th when Bailey Knorr tagged out the tying run at home plate for the final out of the game.

Game 2, 3-2 loss:

  • The second game was just as tight as the first. Ottawa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, and OKWU cut that lead in half when they got to the plate. Lindy Alexander hit an RBI single that scored Knorr to make it a 2-1 Ottawa advantage.
  • Neither team would score again until the 5th inning. Ottawa added a run to make it 3-1.
  • OKWU's rally would come up just short. In the 6th, Maddy Wiese hit an RBI single that scored Knorr to make it 3-2.
  • The OKWU defense did its job in the top of the 7th, keeping Ottawa off the board. But the OKWU bats weren't able to get going in the bottom of the 7th, and Ottawa clinched the victory.

Up Next:

  • The Lady Eagles head to Southwestern on Saturday for a doubleheader. Games are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
